Helpful Elevator Maintenance Tips

Posted on: 7 January 2016

If you are a commercial building owner, you may have an elevator on your property. While this is a convenient way to move people from one level to the next, it can also be a liability if not properly maintained. Some tips that will help you keep your elevator well-maintained and safe to use can be found here.

Maintain an Operation Log

It is important to keep a log of the use for the elevator. This will let you track how much it is used, how often it is called and any indication that there may be an issue present. It is good to also note if an odd sound occurs or something unusual happens. This will help ensure that a repair service can diagnose the issue accurately.

Complete Inspections Daily

This needs to be done along with keeping the operation log in the elevator. When you begin to inspect the elevator, be sure that there is no vandalism and that everything is working as it should.

Replace any Broken or Malfunctioning Equipment

The bulbs that light the call switches can go out and the cab lights may break or burn out. It is essential to make sure that these things are fixed regularly. If you fail to do this, you may find an accident has occurred or receive complaints from those who use the building.

Stay Away from Industrial Cleaners

The internal components of an elevator may become corroded if something unknown or unexpected is used. The main reason for an internal mechanical issue or failure is corrosion that results from the maintenance staff of your commercial building using some type of industrial cleaner on the elevator.

It is a good idea to try and avoid using any type of cleaner on your elevator unless you have specifically received a cleaner from the elevator contractor.

Never Overload the Elevator

The most common way for people to transport a heavy item is by using the elevator. However, if you overload an elevator, it may increase the wear on the mechanisms that are used to operate the elevator. This can create a huge risk to the people who are inside of the elevator.

Generally, you should avoid the transport of anything that weighs more than a quarter of the total maximum capacity of the elevator. If heavy items need to be transported often, installing a service elevator may be a better option, since these are designed for heavier weights.
