Five quick safety checks before using your lifting chain
Posted on: 23 March 2023
Lifting chains are a safe method of moving loads, provided they are kept in good condition. You should ensure that they are regularly inspected so they remain safe to use. Here are some things to look out for.
Twisted links
Firstly, make sure that none of the links in the chain are twisted or bent. This can happen when they are used to lift a load with hard edges. If the chain is not padded, the links may become distorted by the load. They will then be weaker because of the stresses that have acted upon them. There is then a danger that the link will break while lifting. To avoid this, ensure that you do not use any chain with twisted links.
Nicks
Links with nicks or gouges in them will also be weakened. This tends to happen when the links come into contact with external objects that wear them down or damage them. Fortunately, these can usually be filed down to remove the nick. Even though the link seems to be smaller, it will then be stronger because the localised stress caused by the nick has been removed.
Corrosion
Thirdly, check that no part of the chain has become corroded. This can happen when the chain comes into contact with water or harsh chemicals. Cleaning and oiling the chain is usually enough to remove any surface corrosion. If it has gone deeper, you will need to check that the chain is still thick enough to be used in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines.
Wear
Next, you should make sure that there is no excessive wear on the chain links. This can happen anywhere where the chain comes into contact with any other surface. Worn links are weak links and could result in the failure of the chain, so ensure that they still have the recommended cross-section.
Stretched links
Finally, you should check for stretched or elongated links. This can happen if the chain has been used to lift too heavy a load, so ensure that your chains are never overloaded. If you find any signs of stretching in your chain you should immediately stop using it, as there is a chance that it could break if it is used to lift a heavy load.
These simple checks will ensure that your chain is sound and safe to use for lifting. As long as you do not overload it, you will be able to use your lifting chain safely. For more information on height safety products, contact a professional near you.
